How to Keep your Home Safe from Burglars at Christmas

No matter if you are staying at home for Christmas or driving somewhere else you should plan everything to keep burglars away from your home.

Christmas is an exciting time. Wrapping presents, writing cards, decorating your house, meeting with family, it is easy to lose focus. No matter if you are staying at home for Christmas or driving somewhere else you should plan everything to keep burglars away from your home. Winter nights can make it easier for burglars to find empty houses. It’s important to keep your house safe no matter what. You can follow the rules below to keep your presents in the right hands.

Invest in home security

Home security can be expensive but doesn't have to be. Installing a CCTV security camera can make a really big difference. There is also a large selection of alarms. You can also install just simple fake cameras outside the house. To scare away potential burglars.

Make sure all doors, windows and larger vents are closed when you leave the house or go to bed. Remember to not leave keys in locks because there are ways to reach them.

Staying at home

If you are spending Christmas at home, make sure to keep some lights. Radio or tv can help with making home look occupied. Keeping your dog inside, with its bark car scare away potential thieves.

When you are away, you can set light timers. They will turn on/off your lights when you are away and make the impression there is someone in the house.

Christmas tree and presents

A tree with lights and Christmas tree decorations can attract the attention of people. It is important to avoid this. You should try to keep your tree out of direct view from people passing by your home.

We all know presents look great under the tree where everyone can see them. But if you can see then, thieves can too. Do you really want to risk having burglars tempted by this view?

Don’t post about your holiday on social media

If someone sees on your social media that you are going away for Christmas, they know your house is empty. This isn’t something we want to do.

Posting photos or videos with Christmas decorations gives some view of your home. If someone sees something more valuable, they can make your house their next destination. They can also plan their ways in and out if you are showing too much.

Don’t advertise on social media any gifts you got - especially valuable ones. This is the easiest way to show someone where they should come next.

Protecting your car

Don’t leave valuables in the car, it's not that difficult for burglars to open it. It is really easy to break a window if someone sees something interesting in your car. With this in mind, hide things from burglars, not the kids.

If you have two cars, you can leave one on the driveway while traveling. This can scare away criminals. You can also ask neighbours if they can sometimes park on your driveway.

Home insurance

Protecting our homes shouldn’t just be thought of during the Christmas season. If you’re purchasing and storing valuable gifts ahead of Christmas, then checking the terms and conditions of your home insurance policy is the best way to know what you are covered for. And if you don’t have one, maybe you should buy it. It is always the best to be prepared.
