2. Cahercastle Castle, Co Galway (search Airbnb Ireland for Live like a King in my Castle)

Cahercastle Castle was originally built during the 15th Century as a medieval tower. Over the years it has undergone a dramatic restoration and now offers accommodation for couples, or small parties of up to 4 persons. The unique master bedroom set up, has the main four-poster bed underneath a mezzanine floor built into the roof of the Castle. It features a second bed accessed via a wooden staircase. You will also have access to the kitchen and living room. In another quirk of this property, the bath is located in the living room!

The owner is careful to point out that as a 600-year-old authentic Castle the experience might not be for everyone.

Lots of winding staircases, a Castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, it’s not perfect, but it's a real Castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.”

8. Drummond Tower/Castle, Drogheda, Co Louth

On a slightly smaller scale, but all the more intimate and interesting because of this, is the Drummond Tower, or Castle, as many still refer to it. Originally built as a Folly Tower in 1858 by William Drummond Delap, in remembrance of his late Mother. The term ‘Folly’ relates to an architectural folly, that is, constructed for ornamental rather than practical reasons.

Restored to a high standard, the Tower spans 4 levels, including a castellated roof terrace with extensive views of the surrounding countryside. With only the one bedroom, kitchen, living room and roof area. This is the perfect bolthole for that romantic break away from the stresses of modern living.

Enjoying a great location in Co Louth, this is the perfect base if you wanted to explore the history and scenery of the neighbouring Counties of Meath, Monaghan and Armagh.
